Pack 24 Pinewood Derby Car Rules

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY BEFORE BUILDING YOUR PINEWOOD DERBY CAR. Any car found not to be within ANY of the following specs or rules can and will be disqualified at ANY time during the race.

http://www.geocities.com/~pack215/pwd-kitrules.html

1. Cars are to be built only from the Official BSA Pinewood Derby kit, using the body, wheels, and axles provided in the kits. Detailing such as Steering Wheel, Driver, Decals, Painting, and Interior Details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications. All four wheels and axles MUST be used on the car (three, two or one wheeled cars will not be entered into the race).

2. Cars are to be built new for this year's derby. Cars raced in previous year events are not eligible to be raced. Cars will be marked to signify the year of the race the car is raced in.

3. The cars should be marked on the bottom to include the following information:

· Scout's Name, Rank, Den number and the year (2008)

4. Car dimensions and weight shall not exceed the following: If a car does not meet the dimension limits, the car MUST be adjusted by the owner to meet these limits before being entered into the race)

· Car width shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

· Car length shall not exceed 7 inches.

· Car weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.

5. The cars wheelbase shall not be modified in any way. Cars designed where the front hangs over the start post, creating an advantage, will be raced backward.

6. The car shall not ride on any type of spring or suspension system.

7. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting or launch devices, (NO rocket engines!)

8. No loose materials of any kind are allowed on or inside the car. Any car loosing an item or accessory such as a wheel or decorative item will be allowed to continue the race without the item attached.

9. Wheel bearings, washers, covers, and bushings are strictly prohibited.

10. Wheels cannot be wafered, beveled, ridged, crowned, drilled, or altered in any way. Burrs that are present in the axle hole or on the outside may be removed. If the wheels in your box are damaged or defective in any way please contact your den leader and they will get you new wheels. Do not go and buy new wheels from A.C Moore or hobby shops – If they are not BSA wheels they will not be allowed.

11. One-piece axles are prohibited (not allowed). You must use the nails provided in the box.

12. Axles may be lubricated with dry lubricant only. This should be applied before final inspection.

13. After final inspection and registration of each car by the derby officials is completed, cars will be moved to a staging area off limits to all participants. Derby Officials are the only person(s) that are allowed to handle or otherwise touch a car until the cars are returned to the owners after all races are complete and the results are finalized.

14. Decisions by Derby Officials on race day are final.

THE RACE:

All scouts will compete with scouts of their own class. Tiger’s will compete with Tiger’s and so on. The race provides each car to race on each lane before determining a winner based on best average speed.

The winners of the Rank will move on to the overall pack championship race

If time allows, there will be an “unlimited class” in addition to all of the other classes for cars of fathers or scouts that wish to make a second car. These cars can be modified in almost any way short of assist devices.

Arrive early on race day for registration. You will have many opportunities to weigh your car and make changes prior to the race but this takes time. It takes time to register all 90+ cars.
